about

These are our first songs recorded as a duo in the studio. Many of these songs were learned from or inspired by our time studying blues music with current living masters such as Phil Wiggins, Guy Davis, Jerron Paxton, Sunpie Barnes, Steve James, Mary Flower, Dom Flemons, and many, many more fine musicians.

Track Name: Long Tall Mama
Got a long tall mama, she stands about seven feet nine,
Got a long tall mama, she stands about seven feet nine,
And when she get to lovin' holler "Papa won't you take your time."

Oh, when she start to lovin, she sure can do her stuff.
when she start to lovin, she sure can do her stuff.
And she squeeze me so tight, holler "Mama, Lordy, that's enough."

Got a brand new move, it's known as one that she calls her own,
Got a brand new movement, one that she calls her own,
And when she start to kissin' make a poor man leave his home.

And she do a little this, and mama, and she do a little that,
Son, she do a little this, mama, Lord and she do a little that,
And when she put on full steam, make a freight train jump her track.

Said she's long and tall, handsome, sweet as she can be.
Said she's long and tall, handsome, sweet as she can be.
To satisfy that woman takes more than a bumble bee.
Track Name: Sit Down on the Banks of the River
I’m gonna run through the streets of the city
Where the rest have run before,

I’m gonna sit down on the banks of the river
I won’t be back no more.

We gonna have a good time when we all get there—
Gonna sit round my god’s door.

Well when I get up in heaven
I want you to be there, too.

I’m gonna sit down with Abraham, John and Jacob,
Tell ‘em all bout the trouble I been through.

Well, gonna meet my mother and father,
My sister and my brothers, too.
Track Name: Broke Down Engine Blues
Feel like a broke down engine : ain't got no driving wheel
Feel like a broke down engine : ain't got no driving wheel
Been down and lonesome--you know how a poor man feels.

I've been shooting craps and gambling : mama and I done got broke
Been shooting craps and gambling : mama and I done got broke
I done pawned my pistol : mama and my best clothes been sold.

Lordy Lord . . .

I went down to my praying ground : and fell on bended knees
I went down to my praying ground : and fell on bended knees
I ain't crying for no religion : Lordy give me back my good gal please

If you give me my baby : Lord I won't worry you no more
If you give me my baby : Lord I won't worry you no more
You ain't got to put it in my house : Lordy only lead her to my door

Lordy Lord . . .

Don't you hear me baby : rappin on your door
Don't you hear yo daddy : rappin on your door
Then I get down snake-like and tappin flat, slip light ‘cross your floor.

Feel like a broke down engine, ain't got no drivers at all.
Feel like a broke down engine, ain't got no drivers at all.
What makes me love my woman--she can really do the Georgia crawl.
Lordy, lord . . .

Feel like a broke down engine : ain't got no whistle or bell.
Feel like a broke down engine : ain't got no whistle or bell.
If you's a real hot mama--drive away daddy's weeping spell
I won’t be back no mo’, baby.
Track Name: Got the Blues (Can't Be Satisfied)
Got the blues, can't be satisfied
Got the blues, can't be satisfied
Keep the blues, I'll catch that train and ride

Yes, whiskey straight will drive the blues away
Yes, whiskey straight will drive the blues away
That be the case, I wants a quart today

I bought my baby a great big diamond ring
I bought my baby a great big diamond ring
Come right back home and caught her shaking that thing

I said, "Babe, what make you do me this a-way?"
I said, "Babe, what make you do me this a-way?"
Well, that I bought, now you give it away

I took my gun and broke the barrel down
I took my gun and broke the barrel down
I put that joker six feet in the ground
Track Name: Some of These Days
This was a well-established pop number by the time Charlie Patton recorded his interpretation in 1927. Search for the song's title on Youtube and you can hear it performed by Sophie Tucker, Ethel Waters, Bing Crosby, Cab Calloway, The Mills Brothers, and Fletcher Henderson.

Here is Patton's version: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hTJz7B6ou7g&feature

In our interpretation, we imitated the way Patton's recording slowly speeds up, but we kicked it off at an even slower tempo. The choice to use hamboning was in reference to the fact that Patton creates all sorts of complex rhythms by patting his feet and tapping the guitar.

One of the finest, concise pieces on Patton can be read on Elijah Wald's website:
